Place names with the name Nimba other than a mountain range
and a county could not be found among the sources currently
available to the IRBDC.
According to a Liberian Consular Official in Canada, Nimba
County is named after the mountain range of the same name (11
Oct. 1991). The source was not aware of any town with the name
Nimba in Liberia, pointing out that the capital of Nimba County
is Saniquellie. The source added that it is not unusual for a
person coming from a small town in Liberia to give the name of
the county as her/his place of origin or residence, rather than
giving the name of the specific town. The same applies to
official documents: many passports, for example, give the name of
the county as the birthplace or place of residence, particularly
when the person resides or was born in a small town, village or
hamlet (
Ibid.). This is rarely the case when a person comes
from an important city (usually more than one hundred thousand
inhabitants). In the case of Nimba County, the only population
centre that would usually be mentioned by name in most documents or
by individuals is the county's capital, Saniquellie
(
Ibid.).
Further information on the subject could not be found among
the sources currently available to the IRBDC.
