A 4 March 1997 Dallas Morning News
report and a 1997 Mexico Human Rights Network report state
that Alfredo del Mazo was chosen by the PRI as its mayoral
candidate for Mexico City. The Mexico Human Rights Network
report adds that del Mazo was the first mayoral candidate to be
elected by the PRI in its history (ibid.). Del Mazo obtained 141
votes, while his two other contenders obtained 26 and 22 votes
respectively (ibid.).
Information on del Mazo's vision of Mexico City's future can be
found in the attached 21 February 1997 The News report,
while information on his "Proposal for Platform of Government," an
outline on how training programs, day-care centres and health
clinics will be paid for, can be found in the attached 1 June 1997
San Antonio Express-News report
.
According to a 4 July 1997 Austin
American-Statesman report, Cuauhtemoc Cardenas of the Party of
Democratic Revolution (PRD) had support of 48 per cent of
registered voters just days before the election, while del Mazo was
trailing behind with 23.3 per cent. Following the 7 July 1997
elections, two media sources reported that Cardenas won the mayoral
race with nearly twice as much support as his PRI contender del
Mazo (AP 7 July 1997; Manchester Guardian Weekly 13 July
1997). Please consult the attached Austin-American
Statesman and Manchester Guardian Weekly reports for
additional information on the July 1997 elections.
Both the Mexico Human Rights
Network report and an Elector 97's Candidate Profile of del
Mazo state that he was Governor of Mexico state from 1981 to 1986,
and the director of Mexico's Institute of the National Fund for
Workers Housing (INFONAVIT) from 1995 to 1997. Please consult these
two attached documents for additional biographical information on
Alfredo del Mazo.
